Every child deserves the opportunity to hear, communicate, learn and connect with the world around them. Through the Chief Minister Punjab Cochlear Implant Program, eligible children with severe to profound hearing loss are receiving access to advanced hearing care.
Through the Chief Minister Punjab Cochlear Implant Program, children with severe to profound hearing loss are being given access to advanced hearing treatment across Punjab.
Selected hospitals are participating in this initiative, including Alkhidmat Mujahid Hospital, Faisalabad.
Under the programme, eligible children receive the cochlear implant device free of cost, while applicable surgical and hospital charges are paid by the parents or guardians.
At Alkhidmat Mujahid Hospital, our team is proud to be part of this journey—helping children move towards a future filled with sound, speech and new possibilities.
A cochlear implant is an advanced electronic hearing device designed for people with severe or profound hearing loss who may receive limited benefit from conventional hearing aids.
Unlike a hearing aid, which mainly makes sounds louder, a cochlear implant works differently. It helps deliver sound signals to the hearing system so that the brain can learn to recognise and understand them.
The system generally consists of an external sound processor and an internal implant that is placed through a surgical procedure.
For children born with significant hearing loss, early assessment and appropriate treatment can be especially important because hearing plays a major role in the development of speech, language, learning and communication.
Captures and processes sound before transmitting information to the implanted hearing system.
A surgically placed component that forms an important part of the cochlear implant hearing system.
The early years of a child's life are an important period for speech, language, learning and communication development.
When significant hearing loss is identified early, families can explore suitable treatment and rehabilitation options without unnecessary delay.
Timely cochlear implant treatment, when clinically appropriate, can help an eligible child begin developing listening and communication skills.
Professional programming, speech and hearing rehabilitation, and family participation remain important parts of the child's journey.
Every child's journey is unique. Families are guided through the important stages from initial consultation to rehabilitation and follow-up.
The journey begins with a consultation where the child's hearing history, development and previous treatment are reviewed. Parents can also discuss their concerns and understand the next steps.
Specialised hearing tests are carried out to understand the type and degree of hearing loss and determine whether further cochlear implant evaluation may be appropriate.
The child undergoes the required medical and audiological assessments so the clinical team can determine whether cochlear implantation is a suitable treatment option.
Eligible families are guided regarding programme requirements, documentation, treatment and applicable hospital or surgical charges.
Once the required assessments and formalities are completed, cochlear implant surgery is performed by the specialised medical team and recovery is monitored.
After the appropriate healing period, the external sound processor is activated and programmed according to the child's hearing needs.
Regular follow-up, device programming, speech therapy and hearing rehabilitation are essential parts of every child’s cochlear implant journey. With professional guidance, regular device programming and active family participation, children gradually learn to recognise, understand and respond to different sounds, supporting their speech, hearing and communication development.
A cochlear implant does not represent the end of treatment. It marks the beginning of a new learning journey. After activation, children need time and support to understand the sounds they begin to hear. Regular follow-ups, device programming, listening exercises and speech therapy can all form part of this process.
A cochlear implant may be considered for children with severe to profound hearing loss, particularly where conventional hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.
However, cochlear implantation is not automatically suitable for every child. A specialist assessment is necessary to evaluate the child's hearing condition, medical history and other relevant factors before a treatment decision is made.
Children with severe to profound hearing loss may be considered for further cochlear implant evaluation.
Further evaluation may be appropriate when conventional hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.
The child's hearing condition, medical history and relevant clinical factors must be professionally assessed.
Programme support is subject to applicable eligibility requirements and professional assessment.
Behind every successful treatment is a child, a family and a story of hope. Through this initiative, more than 50 children have already undergone successful cochlear implant procedures at Alkhidmat Mujahid Hospital.
Every child's cochlear implant journey is different. From the first hospital visit to surgery, activation and rehabilitation, these moments reflect the courage of children, the commitment of their families and the dedication of the healthcare professionals supporting them.
