Understanding the Technology

What is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an advanced electronic hearing device designed for people with severe or profound hearing loss who may receive limited benefit from conventional hearing aids.

Unlike a hearing aid, which mainly makes sounds louder, a cochlear implant works differently. It helps deliver sound signals to the hearing system so that the brain can learn to recognise and understand them.

The system generally consists of an external sound processor and an internal implant that is placed through a surgical procedure.

For children born with significant hearing loss, early assessment and appropriate treatment can be especially important because hearing plays a major role in the development of speech, language, learning and communication.

External Processor

Captures and processes sound before transmitting information to the implanted hearing system.

Internal Implant

A surgically placed component that forms an important part of the cochlear implant hearing system.

Early Hearing Care

Why Early Hearing Care Matters

The early years of a child's life are an important period for speech, language, learning and communication development.

01

Early Identification

When significant hearing loss is identified early, families can explore suitable treatment and rehabilitation options without unnecessary delay.

02

Timely Treatment

Timely cochlear implant treatment, when clinically appropriate, can help an eligible child begin developing listening and communication skills.

03

Continued Rehabilitation

Professional programming, speech and hearing rehabilitation, and family participation remain important parts of the child's journey.

Chief Minister Punjab Initiative

A Special Initiative for Children Across Punjab

The Cochlear Implant Journey

Care and Guidance at Every Stage

Every child's journey is unique. Families are guided through the important stages from initial consultation to rehabilitation and follow-up.

01

Initial Consultation

The journey begins with a consultation where the child's hearing history, development and previous treatment are reviewed. Parents can also discuss their concerns and understand the next steps.

02

Hearing Assessment

Specialised hearing tests are carried out to understand the type and degree of hearing loss and determine whether further cochlear implant evaluation may be appropriate.

03

Cochlear Implant Evaluation

The child undergoes the required medical and audiological assessments so the clinical team can determine whether cochlear implantation is a suitable treatment option.

04

Programme & Family Guidance

Eligible families are guided regarding programme requirements, documentation, treatment and applicable hospital or surgical charges.

05

Implant Surgery

Once the required assessments and formalities are completed, cochlear implant surgery is performed by the specialised medical team and recovery is monitored.

06

Activation & Programming

After the appropriate healing period, the external sound processor is activated and programmed according to the child's hearing needs.

07

Rehabilitation & Follow-Up

Regular follow-up, device programming, speech therapy and hearing rehabilitation are essential parts of every child’s cochlear implant journey. With professional guidance, regular device programming and active family participation, children gradually learn to recognise, understand and respond to different sounds, supporting their speech, hearing and communication development.

More Than an Operation

A Journey Towards Hearing, Speech & Communication

A cochlear implant does not represent the end of treatment. It marks the beginning of a new learning journey. After activation, children need time and support to understand the sounds they begin to hear. Regular follow-ups, device programming, listening exercises and speech therapy can all form part of this process.

Programme Assessment

Who May Benefit from a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant may be considered for children with severe to profound hearing loss, particularly where conventional hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.

However, cochlear implantation is not automatically suitable for every child. A specialist assessment is necessary to evaluate the child's hearing condition, medical history and other relevant factors before a treatment decision is made.

Severe Hearing Loss

Children with severe to profound hearing loss may be considered for further cochlear implant evaluation.

Limited Hearing Aid Benefit

Further evaluation may be appropriate when conventional hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.

Medical Assessment

The child's hearing condition, medical history and relevant clinical factors must be professionally assessed.

Programme Criteria

Programme support is subject to applicable eligibility requirements and professional assessment.

Final eligibility for treatment and programme support is determined after professional medical and audiological assessment and according to applicable programme criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About the Cochlear Implant Program

Helpful information for parents and families considering the cochlear implant journey.

Is a cochlear implant the same as a hearing aid?
No. Hearing aids generally amplify sound, while a cochlear implant uses an implanted component and external processor to provide sound information to the hearing system. The appropriate option depends on the individual's type and degree of hearing loss.
Is the cochlear implant completely free?
Under the programme, the cochlear implant device is provided free of cost to eligible children. Applicable surgery and hospital charges are paid by the child's parents or guardians.
Will a child hear immediately after surgery?
The implant is not normally activated during the operation itself. Following the required healing period, the external processor is activated and programmed. The child then begins a gradual process of learning to recognise and understand sounds.
Is speech therapy important after cochlear implantation?
Rehabilitation can be a very important part of a child's cochlear implant journey. Follow-up care, listening practice and speech and language support may help the child make effective use of the device.
How can we know if our child is eligible?
Eligibility cannot be determined without assessment. Parents should consult the relevant medical and audiology team so the child's hearing condition can be properly evaluated.
